Jackets For Older Men | Jackets and Coats By Paul Brown

Jackets for older men

Our latest blog is dedicated to jackets for older men. To be clear from the outset, there is no such thing as a jacket or coat for elderly men. The truth is that if you select the right jacket or coat, it will be the perfect addition to ALL men’s wardrobes regardless of age. Remember "fashion fades, style is eternal".

Therefore the real question you should be asking is what constitutes a stylish jacket or coat? The answer can be broken down into four steps; design, materials, manufacturing and finally selecting which jacket is best for you.

Coats and Jackets with thoughtful design, both Work Jackets and for Leisure

A good jacket or coat will easily transcend both time and age and the process starts with selecting the right design. This has two aspects; the style of coat selected and which materials used to make it.

We always design classic men’s coats that complement our ever expanding collection of ladies and men’s clothing. By this we mean starting with well established designs like the iconic double breasted trench coat or Harrington Jacket and then adding our knowledge and expertise to create the best possible version of these heritage styles.

This process is by no means easy. Our designers have to first carefully select which features from these heritage jackets will make it into the final design. We do not want to simply copy everything over as we want our designs to stand out from the crowd. However at the same time if we do not incorporate enough of the original features the jacket loses its identity.

Trench Coat

We currently sell four iconic men's coats; trench coats, field jackets, Harrington jackets and bomber jackets.

A good example of the process in action is with our ladies and men’s flagship trench coats. The coats incorporate many of the classic features you would expect from such a heritage item including sleeve straps, a rear wind breaker, epaulette and a front gun flap. However the coats are unique and would stand out from the crowd. This is achieved through the selection of materials. What really stands out as soon as you see the coats is the use of antique copper eyelets for both the belt and sleeve straps that contrast beautifully against the three colour options; navy, beige and black. Further we use dark brown polished buffalo horn buttons and real leather buckles which make a grand statement or intent and certainly look at their best against the beige colour. Buttons really do make or break an outfit and we are always aware of that when designing our coats, shirts and trousers.

Quality materials for your Coats

Quality materials are the foundation of any good men's coat, especially the outer shell which is visible to everyone. Like the buttons it is critical to the success and longevity of the coat. We stay clear of polyester materials as they don’t allow the skin to breathe which is really important for a coat. Nothing worse than feeling clammy underneath. When it comes to our Harrington jackets, field jacket and trench coats we opt for 100% cotton twill with a dry wax finish. This stunning double bonded 8 oz cloth is second to none. Not only does it drape beautifully but is up to withstanding the every demanding British weather. It will keep you dry and warm. Further the dry wax finish is without doubt the best possible finish. It has all the benefits of a British made wax jacket but without any drawbacks. The main drawback normally being that the wax on a Barbour jacket can come off. This is not the case with our jackets.

The quality of materials does not end with the outer shell . We use the same standard throughout including the traditional check lining which is sourced from the finest shirting mills. The silky sleeve linings are from the Lining Company. When you add the antique copper and real buffalo horn buttons, the final results are truly stunning.

Made in England

When we started our shirt company over a decade ago we originally had our clothing manufactured abroad. However we realised that while there is more than one way to make a shirt or jacket, if you want a truly first class finish you must follow a set of important stages. As Henry Ford once said – "quality is doing it right when no one is looking". With our men jacket and coats we follow a strict manufacturing process which includes a number of additional steps. This costs us extra but the result means the coat will last the test of time.

Each jacket and coat that is ordered online is hand cut and made to order at our Suffolk factory in England. Our British tailors and seamstresses have a passion for producing only the finest clothing and take pride in their work. You are buying more than just a product, but buying into our philosophy that less is more, and that true style does not discriminate between age or decades. All this extra work adds to a price that still represents value.

Which Jacket should I buy? Trench Coat, Field Jacket, Harrington or Bomber Jacket

While all our men jackets will be a great addition to your wardrobe, they do all serve different purposes. The most versatile men jacket we offer is our men’s trench coat which still remains a popular choice to wear to work over your favourite suit. However the coat works equally well for the weekend over a pair of chinos and a denim shirt.

If you are looking for the perfect country jacket then look no further than our field jacket available in three colours; navy, grey and khaki. Pair with our moleskin or corduroy trousers for a winter or spring / autumnal outfit.

Our men Harrington or men bomber jackets are a good smart casual option and work well for work, golf or an evening out. Pair our grey Harrington with French navy chinos and cream trainers. Alternatively try our navy moleskin bomber with men red trousers.

Fit

Our jackets and coats are fitted. If you are looking to layer up or prefer a more generous cut then we recommend going up an extra size.

Washing instructions

Our men trench coats, field jacket and Harringtons all use the same 8 oz dry wax cotton from British Millerain. Should your jacket get dirty we suggest a sponge and cold water. We do not recommend dry cleaning. If you go to the dry cleaners make sure it gets a gentle dry clean, remove the leather buckles from the trench coats and ask for it to be re-proofed afterwards.

Conclusion

If you are a man in your 20s, 50s or 70s, you should always be investing in a quality men jacket that will not only serve you today, but will be your go to coat for years to come. Your purchase today will pay out dividends in the future and never look old.
