Made in England

The Origin of Lace Fabric

It is believed that lace originated in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, and rapidly developed from the 1550s onwards. By 1600 high quality lace was being made in many centres across Europe, including Britain. The demand for lace continued to grow in the seventeenth through to the nineteenth centuries, with the styles changing to meet the current fashion. It was made by hand predominantly by two techniques, known as the bobbin technique and the needle technique. As with many fabrics the industrial revolution ushered in a significant shift in lace production as by 1870 all types of lace could be made on a machine rather than by hand.

Lace in Tops and Blouses

Lace has a very long history in clothing, both men and womens. As it was originally handmade it was expensive and mostly only evident in garments worn by the wealthy, including historical monarchs. It was usually found in elaborate bodices and trimming skirts and tops. As the fabric became more available it found its way into many products as well as clothing. Often as part of tops and blouses lace continued to be used as a fashion fabric throughout the twentieth century, enjoying particular popularity during the 1950s, and again in the 1980s.

Lace continues to enjoy popularity today and a lace shirt or top is now on many womens wish list. Being light and delicate it is also prevalent in lingerie.

Size and Sustainability

We take sustainability seriously. We use Natural fabrics and made to order which avoid wastage and over stocking. We make garments that are classic designs that are built to last in England and pay our staff properly. One aspect that is crucial in this supply chain Is believe it or not size. We make by hand in traditional tailored sizes for both mens and womens clothing. It means that we do not indulge in vanity sizing prevalent amongst most high street stores. To avoid returns and all the transport and re- make issues that follow it is important that you click and view our shirt fit guide guide for measurements to make sure you get the correct size first time when you shop online. The range available covers small to plus size, short to tall and can be viewed on our website. Taking this action will help us in our drive to sustainability which benefits everyone.
