Men's Sustainable Clothing

In a world where change is constant, the fashion industry is not exempt from its transformative tide. The waves of innovation and evolution have brought to the forefront an imperative that cannot be ignored: sustainability.

Like we keep saying, this is not just a buzzword; it's a promise to our planet, a pledge to the generations to come. At WISC, the journey of embracing sustainability has been a heartfelt endeavour—one that resonates deeply with our commitment to both quality and consciousness and one which is reflected on our collection of men’s sustainable clothing.

Imagine a world where fashion isn't just about style and trends, but also about leaving a positive mark. This is where the concept of men's sustainable clothing comes into play. It's not just about wearing clothes; it's about wearing a statement. A statement that echoes the harmony between style and responsibility, fashion and compassion.

As the founder of WISC, Paul Brown's story stands as a beacon of inspiration. With a background in economics and a passion for clothing—particularly men's shirts—Paul embarked on a journey to craft something extraordinary. From crafting his first shirt at the London College of Fashion to establishing WISC, he wove together a tale of sustainability and style, becoming thus the driving force behind our company’s commitment to ethical fashion.

But let's step back and reflect on why this matters. Why should men's sustainable clothing hold a place of importance in our lives? It's a question that goes beyond the realms of fabric and fashion. It's about acknowledging the impact our choices have on the environment, the communities, and the artisans who bring our clothing to life. It's a call to action that resonates far beyond the boundaries of our wardrobes.

Paul's words, echoing with wisdom and passion, remind us that sustainability isn't just about materials; it's about changing the way we approach fashion. It's about shifting from disposable trends to timeless classics that endure. It's about supporting fair trade, embracing eco-friendly practices, and championing the cause of a greener planet.

So, join us today as we explore the evolution of WISC, the essence of ethical fashion, and the significance of sustainable materials and practices. Together, we'll uncover the collections that not only redefine style but also redefine the narrative of responsible consumption.

The Evolution of Sustainable Clothing

Every journey has a starting point, and ours was marked by a deep passion for clothing and an unwavering desire to make a difference.

As WISC’S founder Paul recalls, it was here that the seeds of transformation were sown. From crafting shirts for personal wear to turning it into a business, Paul's journey was one of purposeful evolution.

In 2009, our first ladies and men's shirts were born in the humble confines of my parents' garage. The demand was undeniable, and we soon realised that our vision needed a bigger canvas to flourish. The decision to move production to Italy seemed promising, but it came with its own set of challenges. Forecasting the popularity of shirt designs months in advance proved to be a hurdle. "The result would be us running out of the best designs early on and getting stuck with shirts that wouldn’t shift," Paul shares.

The turning point came in 2012 when we decided to take matters into our own hands, quite literally. We established our factory in Brandon and began employing skilled seamstresses. The focus shifted from bulk production to a more nimble approach—creating small quantities to test a design's appeal. It was a shift towards sustainable practices that minimise waste, streamlined production, and allowed us to cater to the evolving tastes of our customers.

"This reduced waste, improved cash flow and enabled us to fully exploit a popular style," Paul explains. It was a pivotal moment in our journey—one that resonated deeply with our commitment to both quality and sustainability. With newfound flexibility and creative freedom, our designs flourished, breathing life into clothing that was not only fashionable but also responsible.

And so, our journey continued, fueled by a desire to create timeless pieces that marry British tailoring with a sustainable conscience. With each step forward, we embraced the ethos of slow fashion, moving away from the fleeting trends of fast fashion. "We carry very little stock as most of our online clothing is made to order," Paul emphasises. This approach not only reduces waste but also aligns with our vision of creating pieces that stand the test of time.

As the wheels of change turned, we expanded our offerings to include a range of sustainable clothing. From coats and jackets to polo shirts and trousers, each piece bore the mark of our commitment to quality and the environment. The introduction of the "create your own" range, which extends to jeans, moleskin, and corduroy trousers, epitomises our belief in empowering customers to embrace sustainable choices without compromising on style.

Ethical Men's Fashion: A Conscious Choice

In a world overflowing with trends and fleeting styles, ethical men's fashion emerges as a beacon of conscious choice—a choice that extends far beyond the realms of clothing and into the realm of preserving our planet. Paul Brown's resolute vision captures the essence of this ethos:

It's a philosophy that transcends the transient nature of trends, focusing instead on pieces that stand the test of time, both in style and purpose.

In the tumultuous tide of waste and overproduction that plagues the fashion industry, WISC's approach is a refreshing departure. "We carry very little stock as most of our online clothing is made to order," Paul asserts. This commitment not only prevents excess stockpiles but also exemplifies our dedication to reducing waste—an issue that's at the core of fast fashion's unsustainable practices.

Sustainable Materials and Practices in Clothing

As we journey toward sustainability, the materials we use become our allies in this noble cause. At WISC, our commitment to ethical men's clothing is reflected in our selection of eco-friendly materials. Organic cotton, a staple of responsible fashion, finds its way into our designs, embodying the essence of a conscious choice. Paul's words resonate deeply as he affirms, "We use the best materials and British tailoring to ensure all our clothing will last a lifetime." It's a promise that speaks not just to quality but to a commitment to sustainability.

But our efforts extend beyond materials—fair trade practices form the cornerstone of our production. The essence of ethical fashion lies not just in the end product but in every step of its creation. By engaging in fair trade, we ensure that our clothing is created with respect for human dignity and ethical working conditions. It's a practice that aligns with our values, creating a symbiotic relationship between responsible consumer choices and the artisans who craft our clothing.

Frequently asked questions

Can fashion really be sustainable ?

This is a great question.Fashion is defined as is a style of clothing or a way of behaving that is popular at a particular time. This very definition of fashion dictates that it is constantly changing putting pressure on supplies and longevity of garments it results in an insatiable and unnecessary consumption of material energy and supply. 92 million tonnes of textiles waste is created each year and is equivalent to a rubbish truck full of clothes entering landfill sites every second. In this respect linking the two words Sustainable and fashion makes no sense, yet the term is now ubiquitous and is interpreted in a multitude of different ways. The problems are self evident in that single use garments often made of non biodegradable materials are purchased in eye watering numbers. Online returns run at around thirty percent and overall the industry is responsible for a significant percentage of global greenhouse gas emissions every year. Addressing the issue needs a complete re think of lifestyle and clothing purchasing patterns, and the solutions are difficult, complex and sometimes involve contrary considerations. To make matters worse as consumers become aware, less reputable brands are making vague and misleading statements on sustainability just to appease their customers. However it is clear that something must be done and on a scale that makes a difference urgently.

Should I recycle my unwanted clothing ?

When you are clearing your wardrobe, you should always consider what items can still be recycled to stop them ending in landfill. Re selling, or giving to charities that make use of second hand clothes is the better option if available and can help make an impact.

What points should I consider to help ensure my clothing has the least impact on the environment ?

Firstly, always support sustainable brands by checking labels. Secondly, buy clothes built to last and look after them. Thirdly, buy clothing made from fabrics known to be sustainable. Fourthly make sure the garments you buy are a good fit which will mean you wear them lots of times.

Do you make all of your clothing here in the UK ?

Yes we do not source any or the items in our clothing collections, we make them all ourselves in the UK

Would you describe your company as non fast fashion or slow fashion ?

These terms are becoming more familiar now and our classic garments made to last from sustainable fabrics certainly fit the bill

Do you offer next day delivery ?

Our clothes are made to order so we cannot offer quick delivery. Our business is all about craftsmanship and quality. These govern our output and not speed. It means that you will wait a little longer for your garment but we are sure once you put it on you will feel it was worth the wait.
