Excellent fabrics for Cotton Field Jackets

A field jacket is more than just a stylish option for your wardrobe. For many men it is a working jacket that needs to be both practical and withstand the ever demanding British weather.

This always starts with the choice of the outer shell which will have to withstand rain, winter and cold months of the year. With this in mind we turned to a famous waterproofing mill: British Millerain who have been making water resistant fabrics for over a century. The cloth we selected for such an important job is an 8 oz double bonded twill cotton cloth with a dry water resistant finish. This cloth offer many unique benefits:

1. It is 100% cotton twill so it will allow your skin to breathe better than 100% polyester field jackets and coats.

2. As the cloth uses a dry finish it is superior to a traditional was finish you will find on Barbour jackets where the wax can come off.

3. The 8 oz cotton twill is made by laminating two 4 oz twill cloths together. This creates a thin pocket of air between the two layers which acts like double glazing windows. It helps to keep the heat in.

4. The cloth drapes beautifully and has a wonderful weight to it. It looks first class and helps in creating a truly stunning coat. This luxurious and practical fabric is also used to make our Harrington jackets and our flagship ladies and men’s trench coats.

In addition to the outer shell fabric, we spare no expense in using only the finest materials to craft the rest of the jacket. This includes the use of a YKK zip for the front fastening coupled with real buffalo horn buttons. The interior lining is made from 100% check brushed cotton fabric that adds that extra layer of warmth. Last but not least the interior collar and cuffs use a heavy corduroy cloth sourced from British Mill Brisbane Moss. The corduroy traps air and keeps your neck and arms extra warm while also being really comfortable against your skin.

Heritage Military features

When designing a field jacket it is really important to recognise the rich history of this iconic coat which was part of the American military uniform used during the Vietnam war. It was above all an example of practical military jackets with lots of pockets to store military equipment. When creating our version of this iconic jacket it was really important to include these features otherwise the jacket can quickly lose its identity and is no longer a true field jacket.

Features that we incorporated into our current design include four front pockets with button fastened pocket flaps. We also include an interior pocket and working cuffs that can be adjusted. The jackets also have military epaulettes. Last but not least we offer the jacket in classic khaki green along with navy and light grey.

High Quality Manufacturing

All our men’s field jackets, along with the rest of our clothing collections are all proudly made at our Suffolk factory in England. Our British made coats and jackets include the best of British tailoring coupled with a robust production process that ensures not only a high quality finish, but jackets that will last the test of time.

The coats are all sewn together using single needle stitching with the strongest threads from Gutermann and Coats. The buttonholes used for the pocket flaps are sewn on an original Reece 101 keyhole button hole machine. This old machine is slow compared to modern versions but is still recognised today as producing the “Rolls Royce” machined button holes. They are second to none!

As previously mentioned our grey field jacket is our opportunity to put a twist on a very classic and iconic coat. The result is a jacket that offers a level of extra formality that one wouldn’t naturally associate with such a jacket. We have paired the men’s field jacket with navy moleskin trousers, our blue double cuff shirt and a merino wool tie.

Caring for your jacket

When it comes to cleaning your field jacket we recommend cold water and a sponge to remove any dirt. If you do choose to take the jacket to a dry cleaner be aware that the water proof coating will be lost during the dry cleaning process so you will need to pay to have the jacket reproofed afterwards. We recommend sticking with cold water and a sponge.

Sizes and good fit

Our best field jackets are available from size medium up to XX large and are fitted. If you prefer a more generous cut or plan to layer up we recommend going up a size. You can check out the measurements for the coats by clicking here. For a surcharge we can also make adjustments like increasing the sleeve or body length along with a number of other alternative colour options.

Other jackets and clothing

In addition to our field jackets, we also offer men’s Harrington Jackets, gilets, bomber jackets and our flagship men’s trench coats.
